Remember the film? The 2003 motion picture with Russell Crowe; an epic journey… a proud ship… stormy weather… music… friendship… battle… bravery…
Where the film had beautiful scenes and interesting characters, the audio book bored me. The slow start, lengthy descriptions, philosophical and political reflections, naval details and personal detours, just didn’t make it enjoyable to listen to. It wasn’t the narrator, Richard Brown’s fault, his voice and rendition were good. It might be that I’m getting too spoilt listening to easy-flowing language, modern dialogue and reflections, to fully appreciate the author’s knowledge about this time and its customs.
I liked Russell Crowe as Captain Aubrey, I didn’t like the character in the book. He seemed so stuck up and self centered, rambling on about his life and his career and making haughty remarks about life around him. Details of life aboard a man-of-war could be interesting, and I’m sure valuable from a historic perspective, but I was bored.
In the end, I didn’t finish listening to the book, it felt like a waste of time. Maybe this is one of the books you would actually read and get more out of? Or maybe just fast forward the audio book to get on with the story. I’m sorry. It’s possible that this book deserves a more patient reader than me.
