"Coraline" by Neil Gaiman Length: 3 hours and 36 min. ISBN: Listen to an excerpt with: Windows Media Player Real Player |
Coraline and her parents live in a flat in a big old house. Both the upstairs and the downstairs neighbors are a bit funny but, other than the fact they keep calling her “Caroline”, Coraline doesn’t mind. She’s an independent young lady who loves to explore… She explores the house, she explores outside… But when she explores the disused part of the house, she gets more than she bargained for…
A fairy tale with deliciously creepy undertones, Coraline is an enjoyable listen. Gaiman’s art is in capturing all that’s stereotypical in fairy tale while making his story feel original at the same time. I think children will definitely like the book, though it may be a little too dark for younger ones.
I always enjoy books that are read by the author and Gaiman’s diction doesn’t disappoint. He reads at a nice pace, slow enough to make sure children will be able to follow but not so slow to be annoying for adults. His rhythmic voice lulls you as you immerse yourself in Coraline’s world, and her struggles become your own. Can you escape from the dark part of the house?
