Listening to audio books is all well and good, but first you need to find them… Where are they?

Buy audio book cassettes and CDs
There are many sites where you can buy audio cassettes and CDs:

  • Amazon.com obviously sells both a-plenty
  • If you don’t like Amazon, then I’m sure you can find audio books at your favorite on- or off-line bookseller
  • Simply Audio Books is a site dedicated to audio books
  • Froogle can help you find cheap books as well, just add the title you’re looking to what’s already in the search field
  • Finally, you should search eBay for audio books, there are many there

Buy audio book digital content
If you’d rather buy digital content, try these sites:

  • Audible is the best known of these, with thousands of titles available
  • Audio Book Club also sells physical audio books as well as digital ones
  • Despite its name Pay per Listen appears to sell digital content

Rent audio books
Purchasing audio books can be very expensive, so a better option may be to rent them instead. Some sites allow you to do so and work similarly to Netflix. In other words, you sign up and they’ll send you disks by the mail.

Borrow audio books
Given the cost of a physical audio book, unless you plan to listen to one multiple times, taking advantage of your local library’s resources is an excellent alternative.
Almost all the audio books I read are borrowed. What’s more, my library’s book database is online: I find a book on CD via the library’s website, place a hold, and I get an email when it’s ready to be picked up. Here are some links to help you find your library:

  • LibWeb has a search interface, just enter your city or county and see what it finds
  • Or you can browse for your local library’s website

Happy Listening!
